UPDATE: Well I hope you all watched this while it was up and available. “Sorry, “THIS IS WATER – By David Foster Wallace” was deleted at 10:10:11 Wed May 22, 2013.
There are a few options here. I feel very strongly about the importance of the message contained in this speech. I have included a YouTube audo version of the entire speech. I believe, but can not confirm that this maybe the original delivery, but again, not confirmed.
Below that is a short excerpt of the text with a more entertaining, video version. Last, you will find the full text transcribed. The text is a bit of a ‘gift’ as it has since been turned into a short story book that you can buy on Amazon for $9.95 or more. I highly recommend reading the text after watching the short video. Each time I review it, the message becomes more clear. For my fellow executives in Pathwise, this seems to be the closest representation to some of the leadership principles that are taught through the course.
Enjoy, reflect and be present.
Short version – with visuals for effect.
In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn’t become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we’ve ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.
We made this video, built around an abridged version of the original audio recording, with the hopes that the core message of the speech could reach a wider audience who might not have otherwise been interested.
